I wrote back in December of last year (can be read here) about Lonnie Dupre’s planned solo winter attempt on Denali (which would be a record setting summit, I would add). Lonnie had to pull back on that attempt after horrendous weather forced him to stay put too long. I wrote here about this retreat down the mountain.
But per this article in the Duluth Tribune, Lonnie is making another attempt at it this coming January. Per the record that Dupre would set:
Only nine expeditions totaling 16 people have ever reached the summit of Mount McKinley, also known as Denali, in winter. Six deaths resulted from those climbs. Only one team, composed of three Russian climbers, has ever made the summit in January. Of those previous nine winter expeditions, four were solo, but none of the solos was in January, the darkest and coldest time of the year on the mountain.
